The Gunpowder Plot Conspirators
A contemporary engraving of the conspirators of 1605, published soon after the plot to blow up the House of Lords was discovered.
The plan was to kill James I, the Lords and the Commons at the state opening of Parliament, then install a Catholic monarch. It failed on an anonymous letter and a search of the undercroft. The engraving is itself part of the aftermath: the conspirators were made recognisable so that the plot could be remembered, and English Catholics spent the next two centuries living with the consequences.
