In the 1470s, Pope Sixtus IV commissioned the construction of the Sistine Chapel, not as a gallery of art, but as a fortress. Its thick walls and high windows were designed to protect the pope's household guard during potential uprisings or sieges. The architect Baccio Pontelli and builder Giovannino de' Dolci completed the structure between 1477 and 1481, with its dimensions echoing those of the biblical Temple of Solomon. The chapel was consecrated on August 15, 1483, but its ceiling remained a simple blue vault with gold stars for another quarter-century.
