In the late 16th century, the quest for the Northwest Passage became a focal point for European powers eager to challenge the established trade routes dominated by Spain and Portugal. The allure of a direct maritime route through the Arctic, connecting the Atlantic and Pacific, promised not only access to the riches of Asia but also a means to bypass the entrenched Iberian monopolies. This ambition was pursued with fervor by explorers like Martin Frobisher, who embarked on his voyages between 1576 and 1578, and Henry Hudson, whose expeditions from 1607 to 1611 ended in tragedy.
