In the late 15th century, Pope Sixtus IV transformed the Vatican's architectural landscape by commissioning the construction of the Sistine Chapel. Initially envisioned as a fortress with its thick, crenellated walls, the chapel was designed to protect against potential uprisings or sieges in Rome. This pragmatic structure, completed under the supervision of Giovannino de' Dolci between 1477 and 1481, was consecrated on August 15, 1483, with a modest starry ceiling. The chapel's transformation into a masterpiece of Renaissance art began under Sixtus IV, who enlisted renowned painters such as Pietro Perugino, Sandro Botticelli, and Domenico Ghirlandaio.
