Corrections

If you have found an error in a published article — a date, a name, an attribution, a claim that the sources do not support — write and say which article and what is wrong. Corrections are made to the published page rather than argued about in a comment thread, because a corrected page is what the next reader needs. Where a correction changes the substance of an article, the change is described on the page.

We would rather hear it from you than leave it standing. That is not a courtesy; it is the only way a site of this size stays accurate.

Permissions and reuse

The articles, the plates and the layouts on this site are the work of Writesides of History. The history they describe belongs to nobody, and you are free to write about it yourself.

Quoting. Short quotations with a link back are fine and need no permission.
Republishing. Whole articles may not be republished, translated or fed into a paid product without written permission. Ask, and say where and why; the answer is often yes.
Images. Article images are either produced here or come from public-domain and openly licensed collections. Each media page names the source and the licence — check there before reusing one, because the licence on the image is not ours to change.
Purchased files. The maps, packs and dossiers in the shop are licensed for personal and classroom use. Details are in the file itself and on the shop page.

Teaching

If you teach with something from this site and it does not quite fit your syllabus, say so. The classroom material is written for upper secondary and is easier to adjust before the next edition than after it. Bulk or institutional licensing for the paid packs is available on request.

Orders and downloads

Purchases are handled by our shop. If a download has not arrived, reply to your order confirmation e-mail or write to the address above with your order number, and it will be sent to you directly. The refund, shipping and withdrawal terms live with the shop, where the sale happens:

What this site does and does not collect is set out in full on the privacy policy. If you want to know what is held about you, or want it removed, write to the address above.

What we cannot do

We cannot value your antique, identify your family coat of arms, do your homework, or settle an argument you are having elsewhere on the internet. We can usually point you at the scholarship that would settle it, and we are happy to.
