Justin of Nassau hands the keys of Breda to the Spanish general Spinola, 1625 — painted by Velázquez c. 1634–35.
One of the great history paintings of the Spanish Golden Age, painted for the Hall of Realms in Madrid. Velázquez shows the Dutch commander Justin of Nassau surrendering the fortress city of Breda to Ambrogio Spinola in 1625, during the Eighty Years' War — remarkable for its humanity: Spinola lays a hand on his defeated opponent's shoulder, and the forest of Spanish lances gave the work its Spanish name, Las Lanzas.
