Charlottenburg, begun in 1695 as a summer house for Sophie Charlotte and extended into a palace after her husband crowned himself king in Prussia in 1701. The scale grew with the title, which is the point: the ceremony had to make a new crown look old.
The Hohenzollerns were electors of Brandenburg who acquired a royal title in 1701 by arrangement with the emperor, and then had to make it convincing. What followed was a court order of precedence, an elaborate ceremonial of rising and dining borrowed from Versailles, an order of chivalry, and building on a scale the electorate could barely afford.
