Early Modern History (1500 – 1800) · Claude Zygiel

In December 1545, the Council of Trent convened in Trento under the auspices of Pope Paul III, with the reluctant endorsement of Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor. This ecumenical council was tasked with addressing the doctrinal and structural challenges posed by the Protestant Reformation. The Pope aimed to reaffirm papal supremacy and counter the spread of Protestant reform, while Charles V sought to bridge divisions within his multi-confessional empire. The sessions from 1545 to 1552 were marked by bureaucratic delays and power struggles. Papal legates and imperial ambassadors vied for influence over both procedural and doctrinal matters. See our article on the Diplomatic Manoeuvres and Religious Tensions: Papal-Imperial Negotiations at the Council of Trent (1545–1563).
