Dejima
The fan-shaped artificial island of Dejima in Nagasaki harbour, the single point of Dutch trade with Japan from 1641 to 1854.
Dejima measured about 120 by 75 metres and was connected to Nagasaki by one guarded bridge. Through that gate passed all official Dutch trade with Japan for more than two centuries, along with the medical, astronomical and cartographic knowledge that Japanese scholars called rangaku. Sakoku was never total isolation; it was tightly controlled contact through four gates, of which this was one.
