In the summer of 1776, German troops landed on Staten Island, New York, as part of the British buildup against the American colonies. These soldiers, often collectively referred to as "Hessians," were part of a contingent of nearly 30,000 men leased by six German princes to the British Crown. The arrangement was formalized through subsidy treaties, which specified the number of regiments each prince would supply and the compensation they would receive. Hesse-Kassel, under Landgrave Friedrich II, provided the largest number of troops, with an initial 12,000 men that eventually increased to almost 19,000.
