Apollo–Soyuz: Handshake in Orbit (1975)
NASA footage of the 17 July 1975 docking of an American Apollo and a Soviet Soyuz spacecraft — the first international crewed spaceflight and a symbol of Cold War détente.
On 17 July 1975, an American Apollo command module docked with a Soviet Soyuz capsule some 220 kilometres above the Earth, and commanders Thomas Stafford and Alexei Leonov shook hands through the open hatch. The Apollo–Soyuz Test Project was the first crewed mission flown jointly by the two Cold War superpowers, built around a specially designed docking adapter that let two otherwise incompatible spacecraft join.
