Modern History (1800 – now) · Martyn Smith

In 1948, the National Party's victory in South Africa marked the beginning of a new era, transforming existing segregationist practices into the formalized system of apartheid. Johannesburg, as the country's largest city, became a focal point for this transformation. Urban planning was utilized as a tool for social control, with the Group Areas Act of 1950 serving as a key instrument. This legislation authorized the racially based reallocation of urban areas, leading to the forced removal of communities such as Sophiatown, a vibrant center of black culture and political life. The roots of this segregation, however, predated apartheid. See our article on the Building Apartheid: Urban Planning and Racial Segregation in 20th-Century Johannesburg.
