On 17 December 1903, on the windswept dunes of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, Orville Wright lifted the Wright Flyer off the ground for twelve seconds and about 36 metres — the first sustained, controlled, powered flight of a heavier-than-air machine. This Library of Congress film traces how two bicycle-shop brothers from Dayton, Ohio cracked the problem of controlled flight through years of glider tests and their own wind-tunnel data, succeeding where better-funded rivals had failed. Within a single decade the aeroplane would transform travel, commerce and warfare.
