Between July 10 and October 31, 1940, the skies over Britain became the stage for a pivotal conflict. RAF Fighter Command engaged the Luftwaffe in a battle that Winston Churchill would later describe as the country's "finest hour." This aerial campaign marked the first significant defeat for Nazi Germany during World War II. Despite being outnumbered, with only around 700 serviceable fighters against the Luftwaffe's 2,600 combat aircraft, the RAF held firm. The British forces, bolstered by pilots from Poland, Czechoslovakia, and other Allied nations, utilized radar and a centralized command network to maintain control of the airspace. The Dowding System, named after Air Chief Marshal Sir Hugh Dowding, played a crucial role in the RAF's defense strategy.
