Tombstone, Arizona, Photographed for the Farm Security Administration in 1940
Fifth Street between Allen and Fremont, looking north, photographed by Russell Lee in May 1940. The gunfight happened a few doors along Fremont Street in 1881; by the time this was taken the silver was long gone and the town was living on the story.
The fight lasted about thirty seconds and took place in a vacant lot near the O.K. Corral rather than in it. Three men died. What made it famous was everything afterwards: the hearing that followed, the vendetta ride, decades of contested memoirs, and finally Hollywood, which needed a clean confrontation between law and outlawry and found one here by leaving out the mining politics, the county-versus-town rivalry and the question of who was deputised by whom.
