The Suez Crisis Explained
A records specialist at The National Archives in Kew introduces the Prime Minister's Office files on the Suez Crisis of 1956.
Egypt nationalised the Suez Canal Company in July 1956; Britain, France and Israel responded with a military operation that collapsed under American and Soviet pressure. The episode ended British pretensions to act independently as a great power. This film works from the government's own files, which is a useful reminder of how much of the crisis was decided in writing.
