Richard III with Anne Neville and Their Son, in the Rous Roll of 1483
Richard III between his queen, Anne Neville, and their son Edward, drawn by John Rous in 1483 with the heraldry of both houses set out around them. The marriage brought Richard half the Warwick inheritance; the boy died the following year and the line with him.
Yorkist politics ran on marriages and on what marriages carried. Edward IV's secret match with Elizabeth Woodville alienated Warwick and split the party; Richard's marriage to Warwick's younger daughter delivered him land and a northern following; the disputed status of Edward's own marriage was the ground on which Richard took the throne. Rous drew this while Richard reigned, and later rewrote his account of him once Henry VII had won. The roll is British Library Add MS 48976.
