In the mid-14th century, the Golden Horde faced a succession crisis that would forever alter the political landscape of the Eurasian steppe. This crisis, spanning from the 1350s to the 1380s, was marked by civil war, rival khans, and the fragmentation of Mongol rule. The once-unified power of the Horde, an heir to the Mongol Empire’s northwestern domain, began to fracture as internal tensions and external pressures mounted. The Golden Horde's political system was rooted in the legacy of Chinggis Khan, with succession determined by elite consensus rather than primogeniture. This system, while flexible, was vulnerable to internal strife. See our article on the The Golden Horde's Succession Crisis: How Mongol Rule Fragmented.
