The Red Cross in the Great War

The Red Cross of 1914–18 ran hospitals, traced prisoners of war, delivered parcels and staffed ambulance trains, and it did so on money raised from the public with images like this one. The organisation's neutrality gave it access no belligerent government had, which is how it came to hold the only reliable index of who was alive in enemy captivity.
