Taken for the U.S. Farm Security Administration during the Great Depression, Dorothea Lange's portrait of 32-year-old Florence Owens Thompson became the defining image of the era. Lange spent barely ten minutes in the frozen pea-pickers' camp at Nipomo; the photograph she left with moved the federal government to rush food aid to the camp — and became one of the most reproduced photographs in history. As a U.S. government work it is free of copyright.
