The Bauhaus at Dessau
Walter Gropius's Bauhaus building at Dessau, completed in 1926, built for the school it was meant to embody.
Glass curtain wall, exposed structure, wings organised by function rather than symmetry — the building argues the school's case in its own material. The Bauhaus ran for fourteen years and was closed under Nazi pressure in 1933, by which point its teachers were dispersing to Britain, the United States and Palestine, taking the approach with them.
