The Society of United Irishmen began as a reforming club of Belfast Presbyterians and Dublin lawyers who wanted Catholic emancipation and a parliament worth the name. By 1798 it was an insurrection, and it was crushed in weeks: Antrim and Down in June, Wexford by the end of the month, the French landing at Killala too late and too small.
