On 20 July 1969 the Apollo 11 lunar module Eagle settled onto the Sea of Tranquility, and Neil Armstrong became the first human to walk on another world, joined shortly after by Buzz Aldrin while Michael Collins orbited overhead. This NASA film captures the final descent, the first steps and the planting of the flag — the climax of the Space Race that had begun with the Soviet launch of Sputnik in 1957, watched live by an estimated 600 million people.
