The Alexander Mosaic: Battle of Issus
Alexander the Great charges Darius III of Persia — Roman floor mosaic from the House of the Faun, Pompeii, c. 100 BC.
Discovered in 1831 in the House of the Faun at Pompeii, this floor mosaic of roughly 1.5 million tesserae is believed to copy a lost Hellenistic painting of the late 4th century BC. It captures the decisive moment at the Battle of Issus (333 BC): Alexander, bare-headed at left, drives into the Persian line as Darius III turns his chariot to flee. The original is in the National Archaeological Museum, Naples.
